Bob Teegarden, a longtime friend of the University of Missouri Extension 4-H from Daviess County, was welcomed into the newly-established Missouri 4-H Hall of Fame on Aug. 12 at the Missouri State Fair. He is one of 37 individuals and businesses from throughout the state to be honored.
The record of a 137-year-old lawsuit unique to those interested in the lives and legend of Frank and Jesse James was unexpectedly “discovered” last Friday in the Daviess County courthouse. The plaintiff, Daniel Smoot, filed charges against the James brothers in Common Pleas Court of Daviess County. Smoot sought payment of $4,223.50 as reimbursement for a horse allegedly taken by the James brothers following the 1869 attempted robbery of the Daviess County Savings Association.

New teachers joining the Gallatin R-5 staff for the 1997-98 academic year are Mike Dreyfus, Heidi Kayser, Sheila Switlik, Julie Osborn, Lana Ismael, Anita Riley, Sheri Croy, Curt Johnston and Barron Gann.
Two men from Turkmen of United Soviet Russia were in Gallatin on Monday to visit with members of Daviess County Public Water Supply District No. 2. They are hoping to learn about rural water systems in the United States and how people here address water supply issues.

The question of grass greens for the Daviess County Country Club was raised at the August meeting of the board. The Country Club is attempting to gather facts as to the cost of building and maintaining a grass greens course and also looking into how such an undertaking could be financed.
Captains for the 1987 Gallatin Bulldog football team were announced by Coach Joe Battles. They are Kent Critten, Allen Wood and Steve Maxwell.
Another antique business is taking a store front on the Gallatin business square. Mr. and Mrs. Norman O’Hare of Pattonsburg plan to open Carman Antique and Hardware in the building which previously housed Ross Heating and Appliances.

A major construction project now underway in Gallatin is a new 16-unit apartment building for Mr. and Mrs. Frank Thompson. The building is almost identical to the first building constructed some years ago and is located just east of the original structure. The Thompsons own the John Deere agency here.
The Lynch’s Super Market team, coached by John Sweiger, placed second in the Gallatin Little League tournament, which was won by a Cameron team. Members of the Gallatin team are Stacy Baker, Randy Woody, Mike Bradley, Troy Hacker, John Sweiger, Robbie Collins, Kyle McBroom, Roy Hazzard, David Conover, Craig Hacker and John Howard.

Work was begun Monday morning on Daviess County’s largest airfield – at Lake Viking. It is the latest addition to an expanding list of benefits and attractions to property owners there. The sod air strip will be 2,400 feet in length and an overall 300 feet in width.
Gallatin’s Pony League team finished with 10 wins and four losses and also won the area tournament. Team members are John Bennett, Ray Cason, Ricky Teel, Mike Waterbury, Richard Reynolds, Greg Graham, Phil Gooding, Sam Welker, Danny Heldenbrand, Mike Stevenson, Bobby Croy, Steve Tingler, Bill Gordon, Paul Drummond, Howard Weldon, Dennis Morrissey, Steve Searcy, Randy Parks, Lynn Dustman and Rick McCloud.
Connie Linville, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Archie Linville, will be “capped” as a registered nurse at commencement exercises at Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral on Aug. 20 at Kansas City. Connie received her training from the St. Luke’s School of Nursing.

Daviess County residents will be treated to a big time wrestling show absolutely free as the opening attraction in the stellar three-day Gallatin Fall Festival. Two matches feature bouts between Bobby Bruns and Tommy O’Toole, and Laura Martines will be in the ring with Joan Ballard.
A high altitude weather balloon launched from Lowrey Field, Denver, was found in a bean field belonging to Perry Owens northeast of Jameson. Perry will receive $15 for expressing the big box back to the weather station.
A new compulsory school law requiring all children to attend school between ages 7 and 16 goes into effect Aug. 29. The difference between the new law and old law is that a child must now attend school until they are 16 years of age, regardless of the grade they may be in school.

Ray Murrell and his orchestra, a widely-known and highly-popular St. Joseph dance band, will furnish music tomorrow night at the Northwest Missouri Beauty Show at Dockery Park.
The Grand River Conference, of which Gallatin is a new member this year, consists of King City, Maysville, Albany, Stanberry, Grant City, Bethany, Ridgeway, Princeton and Gallatin. The first ever pre-school football camp in Gallatin High School’s history will be inaugurated Saturday when some 35 candidates for this year’s Bulldog team will encamp at the Tolen farm, near Magill Bridge. Their new coach is C. C. (Twister) Smith.
