Emily Gay and Katie Jarboe, both of Gallatin, have been awarded the Elyzabeth Schell Scholarship from the University of Missouri College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources for the 2007-08 academic year. Scholarships are awarded to students whose parents are among Missouri landowning farmers and ranchers.

Brock Griffin of Jameson and his registered AQHA stallion, “Dusted With Steel,” won the breakaway roping championship at the Drysdale Holiday Summer Circuit AQHA qualifying show in Tulsa, Ok. Brock is the son of Marlene Griffin and the late Bob Griffin.

Caitlin Vandiver, daughter of Ron and Alice Vandiver of Maryville, was recently honored by being chosen as an all-star performer at the Hall of Fame Dance Challenge event held in Omaha, Neb. She is the sister of Bethany Bell of Gallatin and Brandy Vandiver, formerly of Gallatin, and the great-niece of Stanley Peery of Jamesport.

Aug. 13, 1997

Rain was appropriate Monday morning for the dedication of the new $1.4 million Magill Bridge spanning Grand River southeast of Gallatin. Daviess County Commissioner Danny Heldenbrand remarked that it was rain that caused the flood of ’93 which swept away the old bridge.

Landmark Manufacturing Corporation signed a contract with John Deere to stamp side frames, cab floor pans and miscellaneous other parts for the John Deere agricultural tractors. As part of the agreement, Landmark purchased two large metal stamping presses from John Deere, a 2,000-ton press and a 1,000-ton press.

Navy Chief Petty Officer Randall W. Bashford, a 1980 graduate of Gallatin R-5, currently on a six-month deployment aboard the aircraft carrier USS Constellation, assisted in the rescue of two Iranian merchant seamen. While on patrol, lookouts spotted the two men clinging to floating debris about 70 nautical miles off the coast of Bahrain. The Iranian seamen had been adrift for five days after their cargo ship sank in heavy seas.

Aug. 12, 1987

The drive to raise funds to repair the roof on Courter Theater is underway by members of the Gallatin Theatre League. Fundraising chairpersons are Sharon Lockridge and Nancy Garnett.

The remains of 34 Native Americans that were excavated during construction of Smithville Lake were reinterred there during ceremonial rites August 6. The rites were conducted by a confederation of Potawatomi, Seminole, Kiowa and Arikara tribes.

The Alvin Smith family, Route 1, Gallatin, will represent Daviess County at the Missouri State Fair Monday, Aug. 22, “Farm Family Day.” The Smith children, Kathy, 17; Julie, 13; and Allen, 12; have livestock entered in the state 4-H beef show.

Diane Kay Parker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Parker of Altamont, was first runner-up in the “Miss Farmers’ Electric” contest at the cooperative’s annual meeting in Chillicothe. Diana Graham, Hamilton, was second runner-up.

Aug. 10, 1967

For delivering badly-needed ammunition to troops under heavy fire from the Viet Cong, Army Sergeant Major Jack L. Wood, son of Mr. and Mrs. Audie Wood of Jamesport, received the Silver Star Medal July 4 near Dau Tieng, Vietnam. The 36-year-old sergeant major earned the medal when the battalion outpost was surrounded by a Viet Cong force numbering about 2,500. Sgt. Major Wood crossed open territory three times to deliver ammunition to forward bunkers of the company.

Daviess County Probate Judge Charles D. Brandom will be honored by the Missouri Bar for completing 50 years of service as a member of the legal profession. In accordance with the resolution, Judge Brandom will receive the honorary title of “Senior Counselor.”

Aug. 8, 1957

A nationwide study of income levels brings out the fact that there is now a greater proportion of families in Daviess County in the higher income brackets than ever before. In Daviess County, 21.6 percent of the families now have net incomes, after taxes, of $4,000 or more a year.

Ed Vaughn, owner of the Gallatin Western Auto Store, lost his pickup truck and its cargo to thieves last Thursday night in Kansas City. No trace of the vehicle or merchandise has been found. The thieves apparently “jumped” the ignition since Ed had the keys in his pocket while in the warehouse.

Aug. 14, 1947

Commander Jule C. Tate, son of the late J.H. Tate of Gallatin, and brother of H.L. Tate, Gallatin motor car dealer, has been given a commendation for meritorious conduct in the performance of his duties while serving as commanding officer of the 60th Seabee Construction battalion from April 1943 to March 1944.

Five Gallatin vocational agriculture students, Robert Elliott, Jerry Carter, Tommy McWilliams, Dale Townsend and Nevin Yates, will leave tomorrow for Sedalia where they will exhibit Hampshire hogs and Southdown Sheep at the Missouri State Fair.
