Leading the Gallatin High School Class of 2007 graduating ceremonies held Sunday were Valedictorian Ayrica Batson and Salutatorian Alyssa Strein.
The Daviess County courthouse is no longer bare and bald, it has been donned at last by its missing dome. The dome was formed from stainless steel and sheet metal, and put together by welds and rivets.
The Gallatin Varsity Academic Team finished the 2007 season in a tie as conference champion with an 8-1 record. At district competition, they scored the most points of the 11 teams making it into the semifinals, where they finished third. Jonathan Arnold and Cameron King were selected to the all-conference academic teams. Other members of the GHS team are Ethan Walton, Phillip Arnold, Donegal Higgins, Kevin Corwin, Laura Makovec, Katy Makovec, Connemara Higgins and Dessa Crum.

Valedictorian and Salutatorian honors were announced during graduation ceremonies at Gallatin High School for 40 members of the Class of 1997. Andrea Wilkinson was named Valedictorian and Kim Sweatman is Salutatorian.
Cameron police officer Todd Watson was hired as Gallatin police chief effective June 1. Mr. Watson is a 1986 graduate of Gallatin High School. He has worked in the Cameron Police Department since 1985.
The Gallatin R-5 sixth grade class is having a “Thank You and Goodbye” reception for Darla and Shane Fuller on May 22. Mr. and Mrs. Fuller will be moving to Smithville where Shane will be director of bands for Smithville schools. He will also be pursuing his master’s degree at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Three Gallatin sixth graders entered economic stock market games in a competition organized by the Center for Economic Education at Northwest Missouri State University. Some 130 high school and elementary school teams were involved in this area. Gallatin’s team consisted of Macy Woodard, Schann Lynn and Jenny Patrick. Their sixth grade teacher is Sherry Golden.
A total of 189 entries are registered to compete in 11 events during the two-day Gallatin Qualifying Missouri High School Rodeo this Saturday and Sunday. Local contestants include Christy Froman, Cole Froman, Becky Griffin and Clint Barnes.
Four employees at the Gallatin Post Office have received certificates noting high daily attendance. This foursome’s combined sick days add up to 155 unused days. They are Ora Ocree, Steve McKinsey, R. L. Eaton and Geneva Johnson.

A man who led highway patrol officers on a high speed chase from near Eagleville, sometimes hitting speeds of 125 miles per hour on a stolen motorcycle, piled it up near Gallatin on Thursday afternoon at a roadblock set up by Sheriff Leland Houghton.
Mrs. Huldah Mettle, secretary to the superintendent, is retiring after a 12-year career at Gallatin High School. Mrs. Mettle attended Greg College in Chicago for two years where she studied business and court reporting. She also taught at a country school, taught shorthand and taught at the Chillicothe Business College.

Janet Sue Paul and Lynda Sue Muller are Valedictorian and Salutatorian, respectively, of the Gallatin High School Class of 1967. Janet will attend the University of Missouri on a Curators scholarship while Lynda will attend M.U. on a FHA scholarship. Both have outstanding high school records of grades and activities.
Kenneth Uthe, son of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Uthe of Winston, won first place in the Graphic Arts division in the Missouri Industrial Education awards program at M. U. Kenneth received top recognition for his printing skill accomplished in graphic arts class at Winston under the direction of his instructor, Mr. Donald Warford.
A strong trend in favor of expanding the American military effort in Vietnam to achieve a decisive victory featured the response to his legislative questionnaire poll, Cong. W. R. Hull, Jr., of the 6th District of Missouri, reports. Only 13.7% of the responses favored terminating our military effort there.

World famous corn muffins were presented to America’s number one author on good eating, Duncan Hines, by Mrs. Virginia McDonald, owner of Gallatin’s renowned Tea Room. Fondness for her muffins has been the reason for many 600-mile trips by Mr. Hines from his home in Bowling Green, Kentucky to Mrs. McDonald’s tea room here. Mrs. McDonald presented the muffins in Chicago at a dinner for the Duncan Hines Family.
Mayor Floyd E. Nelson will ask the city council to approve the purchase of a new fire truck for Gallatin at a cost of $8,500 to expand the city fire department to two trucks and permit the department to respond to fire calls in the rural areas.

The Wallace McAfee post No. 68 at its meeting Monday night, voted to change its name to the McAfee-Stephens post, thus honoring a World War II serviceman of the community. Donald Andrew Stephens, fireman first class, U. S. Navy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilda Stephens, was the first Gallatin serviceman to be killed in action in World War II. He was on duty on the destroyer, U. S. S. Hambleton, when it was torpedoed in the Fedala Bay, French Morocco, Nov. 11, 1942.
The Daviess County draft board office closed permanently at noon yesterday, after more than six years of federal occupancy at the courthouse.
