The Community Foundation of Northwest Missouri may be one of the best kept secrets around; but we hope to change that with a series of columns informing you about the great things taking place right here in your community. Established in 2009 to improve the quality of life for the people of Northwest Missouri through philanthropy, the Community Foundation serves 18 counties: Atchison, Andrew, Buchanan, Caldwell, Clinton, Daviess, DeKalb, Gentry, Grundy, Harrison, Holt, Linn, Livingston, Mercer, Nodaway, Putnam, Sullivan, and Worth. Managed by a Board of Directors of 22 dynamic regional representatives who oversee the operations of the Foundation, we are a public charity committed to serve as a vehicle for charitable giving; helping donors give to the causes that they care about.

Directed by a staff of two full-time and four part-time dedicated individuals, the Community Foundation is based in St. Joseph but the staff is constantly “on the road” sharing the mission of regional collaboration with two employees living and working outside of St. Joseph. We believe in the power of charitable giving and philanthropy by transforming the region into an economically vibrant area. The community foundation is a 501(c)(3) and today has assets in excess of $20,000,000.00 and manages nearly 200 individual funds.
Various types of funds are available allowing donors to give back to their communities. Donor gifts will not only strengthen nonprofits but create a culture that results in increased philanthropy and prosperity. Among the options available to donors are Donor Advised, Scholarship, Organizational, Field of Interest, Undesignated, and Designated funds. All financial record keeping, accounting, and reporting is taken care of by our staff and the donor has the option to continue with their current financial advisor while we take care of the administrative details. Establishing a fund with the Community Foundation of Northwest Missouri is as easy as opening a checking account.
During the next few weeks, we hope to share some of the outstanding funds that have been established through the Community Foundation and how they are making Northwest Missouri communities come alive again. Through such efforts, the Community Foundation is able to promote and encourage charitable giving, help donors to create a legacy, ensure that their money earned here can stay here, support the intent of area donors, and finally, provide for efficient and effective fiscal management of funds invested through the Community Foundation.
