Phillip Arnold, 15, of Gallatin Boy Scout Troop 67, was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout at a court of honor held Sunday at The First Baptist Church of Gallatin. Phillip is a sophomore at Gallatin High School, the son of Mike and Linda Arnold, the grandson of Mildred Cox of Gallatin, and Jack and Carlotta Arnold of Jamesport.
Gallatin’s Derrick McBroom will make his first appearance in the MSHSAA Class 1 Golf Championship after qualifying with a top 15 finish at Monday’s district tournament. McBroom shot 97 over 18 holes to finish in a tie for 13th.
Hannah Barker, a senior at Winston High School, broke the HDC Conference high jump record on Tuesday with a jump of 5’ ¼”. Barker also won the 100-meter hurdles and placed second in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes.

One of Gallatin’s favorite sons returns to address the graduating Class of 1997. Scott Watson, a Joplin attorney and former prosecuting attorney for Newton County, is the keynote speaker at Gallatin’s graduation ceremonies set for May 18.
Frank Wheeler, a 1980 graduate of Jameson High School, has accepted a teaching position in physical education and will become head boys basketball coach at Blue Springs High School this fall. For the past six years, Wheeler compiled a 67-75 record coaching boy’s basketball at Platte County.
Gallatin High School seniors Marty Eaton and Annie Gibson reigned as king and queen of the junior-senior prom.

The business district in Jamesport has grown by 30 businesses over the last year, according to a report in the Tri-County News. Several of Jamesport’s shop owners are building statewide reputations.
Three daughters of Dr. and Mrs. George Lin of Winston have recently received awards for their academic-athletic achievements. Jenny Lin was named Scholar-Athlete 1986-87 of the University of Alaska-Fairbanks as the only athlete on campus to maintain a 4.0 GPA for the last two semesters. Jodie Lin was recipient of the Academic-Athlete Award at Avila College in Kansas City. She has maintained a 4.0 GPA for two years. Beth Lin received an athletic scholarship award at Iowa State University. The award is given to athletes for outstanding scholastic achievement. She is on a Naval ROTC scholarship and is majoring in architecture.

Kelly Pickering, a senior at Gallatin High School, constructed a pool table that captured sweepstake honors at the 15th annual Northwest Missouri District Industrial Arts Contest held at NWMSU. He is now eligible to compete in the state contest later this month.
Frank Ed Tolen recently passed the Missouri Bar Exam and is now practicing law in a partnership with C. Dudley Brandom of Gallatin. A 1968 graduate of Gallatin High School, Tolen completed his studies at the University of Missouri-Kansas City this past December.
Keith Morrissey, Gallatin’s gift to the University of Missouri football program, has been elected one of the co-captains for the 1977-78 Tiger football squad. Morrissey will share the honor with James Taylor, an offensive tackle. Both will be seniors this fall.

Master Sergeant Leo M. Terry, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey A. Terry of Gallatin, has received the U. S. Air Force Commendation Medal at Otis AFB; Mass. Sgt. Terry was decorated for meritorious service as a transportation superintendent at Camp New Amsterdam AB, Netherlands.
Daviess County continues to be troubled with thefts with four firms being broken into over the weekend. A cash register containing $673.59 was taken Saturday night at the Lock Springs grocery. At the old Wabash crossing the same night, The Farmers Grain and Fertilizer Company, and the MFA Exchange were broken into. The Alexander Market in Jameson was also entered after thieves threw a brick through the front door glass in order to gain entrance.

John Somerville, who has built a successful business on the motto: “Don’t say have you got it, just say how many,” observed his 25th anniversary as a Jameson hardware merchant. The Somerville firm is the second oldest in Jameson, exceeded only by Dr. Graham’s medical practice.
The McDonald Tearoom will be honored by Duncan Hines as a 20-year member of the Duncan Hines family. Duncan Hines will personally award the citation to Virginia McDonald at the 15th annual Duncan Hines Family dinner at Chicago’s Sheraton Hotel.

A tornado sweeping down the main street of Worth, Mo., population 233, located 60 miles north of St. Joseph on highway 169, Tuesday, left 13 persons dead, 59 other injured and damage estimated at $200,000. The business district of the town was reduced to kindling wood by the terrific wins.
The Gallatin Chamber of Commerce membership roster for 1947 now totals 119 business firms and individuals. Financial pledges have passed the $3,500 mark, it was reported.
Eight light planes from Kansas City, carrying 19 pilots and passengers, visited the Daviess County airport, west of Gallatin, Sunday. In the afternoon, planes from Cameron, Pattonsburg and McFall landed at the field.
