Pattonsburg FFA placed 14th and the Gallatin FFA placed 24th out of 305 chapters in the state earning Top Chapter Awards at the 79th Missouri FFA Convention held in Columbia. Only 10% of state chapters receive the Top Chapter Award each year.

Superintendent Wendell Burns said the Pattonsburg R-2 School was dismissed early this morning after custodians discovered a bomb threat. Custodians found a message, written in soap on a mirror in the visiting girls locker room.

GHS National Honor Society inductees are Kaddie Mott, Megan Chadwick, Kelly Critten, Casey Sweatman, Courtney Ray, Sydney Elbert, Kevin Chadwick, Alex Burge, Taylor Porter, Derrick Sprague, Logan Corwin, Cody Selby and Lacey Dixon.

April 30, 1997

New GHS FHA officers for 1997 are Allison Spidle, Courtney Houghton, Victoria Esterline, Holly Garnett, Sarah Hemry, Devin Hamilton, Abbey Howard, Shannon Batson and Miranda Eaton.

Members of the championship team from Stanberry’s 14-team golf tournament are Tyson Elbert, Jon Culver, Josh Fitzmaurice, Scott Crose and Bob Wiley.

Edward E. Nixon, MD, Gallatin, was honored recently by the Missouri State Medical Association on his 50th year in practice of medicine.

Winston has now formed a Historical Society, who will make their first project restoration of the Winston Depot. Estimated costs of repairing and rebuilding the exterior of the depot are $6,000.

Gallatin’s Jaycee chapter is no more. Members of the group voted to dissolve as an official Jaycee chapter but to continue as a new local men’s organization.

Jameson alumnus Larry Holley, head men’s basketball coach at William Jewell College in Liberty, has been selected as the Heart of America Athletic Conference Coach of the Year by conference basketball coaches.

April 27, 1977

The City of Gallatin has decided to sell the old high school buildings it purchased from the R-5 School District a few years back. The vocational agriculture building will be retained.

The 1977-78 Gallatin junior high cheerleaders are Annette McLaughlin, Kelly Elbert, Cheryl Haggerty, Kim Bradly, Kelly Allen and Diana Clark. The senior high cheerleaders are Sandra Critten, Valorie Hartpence, Susan Snyder, Willa Grisel, Lesa Fletcher, Carla Searcy and Gina Osborn.

Buster McFee of Altamont hit the jackpot when he found enough mushrooms to nearly fill a child’s wading pool. He collected all of these in just one day.

April 27, 1966

Major relocation and improvement of highway 6 west of Gallatin to I-35 remains in the undetermined future, according to information received by members of the delegation which appeared before the highway commission recently. It is believed that traffic on 6 will be boosted considerably by Valkyrie Valley traffic.

The past week’s weather was marked, or marred, as you like, by rain, sleet, hail, flurries of snow, a devastating late spring freeze, climaxed by Friday’s “twister,” which made natives move like cats passing a violin factory. The mercury here dropped to 22 degrees for many hours. Some areas of the county have received over 12 inches of moisture already this year.

At least three tornado funnels slashed through isolated sectors of Daviess County Friday afternoon, according to the U.S. Weather Bureau, causing considerable damage. Only splintered debris remains of a barn on the James Everly farm northeast of Jamesport. A combine was blown out of the barn and tumbled several hundred feet into a ravine.

April 25, 1957

Judy Burns, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Burns of Gallatin, is nicely settled in Washington, D.C., where she is employed by American Airlines. Judy is a teletype operator with American, accepting that position upon graduation from the Weaver Airline Personnel School in Kansas City.

Wayne Clevenger was awarded a State Farm Mechanics award of $100 at the FFA convention in Columbia last Wednesday. Among his accomplishments was converting a garage into a farm shop and making the most of the shop equipment. Wayne also installed a bathroom at home by himself. Wayne is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Clevenger.

April 24, 1947

An industry which is destined to play an important part in the future of the Pattonsburg community started operation Tuesday of this week when the new cap factory opened its doors for business. Eleven of the plant’s 51 machines were used on the first day, and the first item of production was shop caps.
