Gallatin High School coaches, athletes, parents and friends officially closed the book on the 2016-17 winter sports seasons last Wednesday night at the GHS Winter Sports Banquet.
Athletic Director Barron Gann served as master of ceremonies and welcomed everyone with “thank yous” listed in the event’s program.
Cheerleader sponsor Kelly Walker introduced her six basketball cheerleaders and thanked them for their hard work and dedication. Recognized were captains and four-year participants Tatum Griffin and Chloe Simmons, Kelli Lynch, Megan Redman, Essie Williamson and Annie Nelson.
Simmons was awarded the Leadership Plaque and Williamson received the Spirit Plaque.
Boys basketball coach Justin Collins, assisted by Ryan Beenken, introduced members from the 10-14 Bulldog squad. This year’s team consisted of Aidan Adkison, Blaine Bailey, Nathan Baker, Colin Beck, Haden Bradford, Dylan Burns, Logan Burns, Gabe Cole, Keaten Collins, Landon Corwin, Morgan Corwin, Tristen Gibson, Riley Holmes, Thomas King, Morgan McBroom, Patrick McNickle, Jett Simmons, Chad Walker and Jacob Wilson.
Collins, Walker and Morgan Corwin were recognized as four-year basketball participants. Special awards were given to Simmons, Offensive MVP; McNickle, Defensive MVP; and Morgan Corwin, Bulldog Award signifying work ethic, school and community representation.
Coach Chad Sullenger and assistant coach Courtney Ray reviewed the Lady Bulldogs’ 20-7 varsity season and 6-5-1 junior varsity campaign and previously reported post season honors.
Members of this year’s squad included Sami Boyd, Maelea Coulson, Megan Cox, Shaunessy Eaton, Janee Filbeck, Kelsey Maxwell, Macie McNeely, Hayley Michael, Briar Roll, Karley Salmon, Courtney Shubert, Madalyn Shubert, Taylor Sloan and Cora Stout.
Senior and four-year participants were Boyd and Sloan. Madalyn Shubert received the Rookie of the Year award and Maxwell was named Most Improved. Salmon received the Offensive MVP award and Sloan, who set a school record in blocked shots, received the Defensive MVP award. Stout was the team’s top rebounder. Michael also received the hustle award.
Basketball statisticians and managers Kaia Mehlberg, Libby Endicott and Bethany Bailey were also recognized.
Wrestling coaches Zach Morrison and Tim Michener praised their 2016-17 Grand River Conference wrestling champion squad that finished 23-0 in dual competition. Seven Bulldog wrestlers finished with at least 30 wins and 11 overall with winning records.
This year’s team, along with season records, included: Cody Arnold (3-6), Gaven Gray (9-2), Tom Crouse (26-6), Brigham Steele (2-6), Aidan Wayne (23-13), Jared Williams (4-2), Caleb Boyd (34-7), Dakota Martin (8-22), Dalton Swalley (20-23), Michael McLey (34-12), Keegan Allen (27-10), Drayton Harris (42-12), Ross Critten (44-4), Graydee Rains (46-6), Declan Schweizer (34-12) and Wyatt Bird (41-10).
Swalley, Bird, Schweizer and McLey were recognized as four-year wrestling particpants and Bird was recognized for his school record 164 career wins, four state tournament appearances and three state medals. Critten was named Rookie of the Year. Boyd and Schweizer shared the Most Improved award. Rains was named team MVP.
Mr. Gann closed ceremonies with the announcement of Academic All-Conference awards. To be eligible, athletes must be varsity letter winners and have a GPA of 3.5 or higher in the fall semester.

Wrestling academic all-conference honorees were Wyatt Bird, Caleb Boyd, Graydee Rains, Aidan Wayne, Brigham Steele, Keegan Allen and Drayton Harris.
