A new program called Senior Boxes will become available at the Seventh Day Adventist Community Service Center Food Bank in April, according to Bill and Karen Reed, directors.
In addition to their regular commodities, participants will be able to pick up a 35-pound box of nourishing food. The foods include canned protein, juice, vegetables, fruit and cereal. The food is distributed through Second Harvest out of St. Joseph through the USDA Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP).
Sixty boxes are being received. So far 40 people have signed up to receive the boxes; 20 people are still needed. If more than 60 sign up, their names will be placed on a waiting list.
Applications for Community Food and Nutrition Assistance are available at the Daviess County Food Bank (Seventh Day Adventist Community Service Center Food Bank). You must be 60 years of age and over to apply.
The Seventh Day Adventist Church and Community Service Center is located at 1206 South Willow. Hours for the Service Center and Thrift Shop are every Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Phone 663-2478.
The supplemental food program application is through the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.
Those applying for the boxes of food will need three things — proof of income for the household; proof of address; and an I.D.
Mrs. Reed observed that the Food Stamps Program (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP) is another program that helps food-insecure seniors. Those who are eligible are encouraged to apply for both the Commodity Supplemental Food Program and the Food Stamps Program at the Food Bank.
