The University of Missouri Extension Council for Daviess County held its annual dinner on Feb. 21 at the Jamesport Rural Fire Department community room.

Recognized as recipients of inclusion in the University of Missouri Extension Leaders Honor Roll were Jena Eads, club leader of the Jamesport Brushy Squirrels 4-H Club, and John Davis, manager of Grand River MFA-Gallatin. Members of the honor roll are recognized for going above and beyond expectations, while generously giving of their time and energy to MU Extension programs.

The Missouri Century Farm Families of Garold and Mildred McDaniel and John F. and Nancy J. Gann were presented with signs for their farms.

The McDaniel 40 acre farm has been in the family since 1844, with original ownership by James Russell McDaniel, the great-great-grandfather of Garold McDaniel.

The Gann 191 acre farm has been in the family since 1915, with original ownership by Benjamin F. and Virgie F. Kissinger.

The Missouri Century Farm program’s history dates back to 1976 as a result of the Missouri Committee for Agriculture that was co-chaired by James B. Boillot, Director, Missouri Department of Agriculture, and Elmer R. Kiehl, Dean of the College of Agriculture, University of Missouri. The committee’s purpose was to organize the American Revolution Bicentennial celebration in Missouri. One activity that was initiated by the committee was the “Centennial Farm” project, which awarded certificates to persons owning farms that had been in the same family for 100 years or more. Interest in the program continued after 1976. The College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources and University of Missouri Extension planned a 10-year update in 1986 called the “Century Farm” program. This program has been sustained as a yearly event with over 100 farms recognized each year. In 2008, the Missouri Farm Bureau became a program co-sponsor.

Following the dinner, the newly formed council held the election of officers. Jayla Smith will serve as the council chair, Raymond Hildebrand will serve as vice chair, Melinda Uthe will serve as secretary, and Alicia Chrisman will serve as treasurer for 2017.

Tim Baker is the Horticulture Specialist for Daviess County. Becky Simpson is the 4-H Youth Development Specialist and County Program Director for Daviess County.
