Three Pattonsburg teams placed first at the Junior High Science Olympiad held Feb. 4 at Maryville and now advance to state competition at Westminster College in Fulton on April 8.
This was the first time that Pattonsburg as a team placed high enough to qualify as the regional alternate. The team scored enough points to place third, which makes them an alternate to state if one of the top two teams can’t participate.
Pattonsburg is one of the smallest schools in the northwest region to compete at the Science Olympiad, which includes students from 1A-6A schools. Pattonsburg competed with 11 students, and of the 11 students, all placed in at least one category.
“Our students worked hard, many logging more than 40 hours of practice between home and school, in the last few months,” said Tuanette Hulet, science instructor.
Science Olympiad students compete on a regional level in their understanding of advanced scientific concepts in areas of interest. Some competitions contain material similar to a college classroom rather than a typical middle school classroom and are quite challenging.
Many of the teams in the competition sent full teams of 15. These teams were able to enter and place in more events and thus accumulate a higher point total.
Mrs. Hulet expressed her gratitude to the following: the PHS Booster Club for donating $150 towards a bottle rocket launcher; Dan Dreesen for helping with Roads Scholar; Sherry Siever for covering a practice; Sandy Booth for her work with the Food Science Team; and all the parents who helped and encouraged their children along the way.
Pattonsburg Science Olympiad students ranked as follows: 1st Roads Scholar: Kaden Hodge and Cooper Teel (state bound); 1st Rocks and Minerals: Ryelin Hulet and Jillian Plymell (state bound); 1st Write It, Do It: Quincy Crone and Jillian Plymell (state bound); 2nd Reach For The Stars: Kaden deJong and Ryelin Hulet; 3rd Food Science: Lillian Carter and Jillian Plymell as an alternate for Sofia Nunn; 4th Ecology: Wiley Butler and Jillian Plymell; 4th Invasive Species: Lillian Carter and Ryelin Hulet; 5th Disease Detective: Kaden Hodge and Jimmie Nalle; 5th Dynamic Planet: Wiley Butler and Kaden Hodge; 5th Experimental Design: Dylan McCrary, Jimmie Nalle and Cooper Teel; 5th Fast Facts: Quincy Crone and Lillian Carter as an alternate for Sofia Nunn; 5th Meteorology: Cameron Jones and Dylan McCrary.
