Bramble and Maggie, Snow Day by Jessie Haas

Easy read chapter book

This book in five words or less: Horses make great pets!

Everyone is getting ready for the big snow storm. Bramble, Maggie’s horse, watches all the activity with curiosity and wonder. Food and water is stockpiled for everyone, even the horse. When all the preparations are made, Maggie puts Bramble in her stall, but she can’t close the door.  Bramble pushes through the door later and goes exploring in the snow storm. Maggie is upset the next morning when she can’t find Bramble but she comes back and lends a hoof in getting Maggie and her family dug out from the snow storm. Maggie and Bramble are the best of friends; I look forward to their further adventures.

The Other Einstein by Marie Benedict

Adult Historical Fiction

This book in five words or less: Einstein’s wife actually discovered relativity.

A beautiful novel, based on the life of Mileva Maric Einstein, Albert Einstein’s first wife and by all historical accounts a brilliant mind in her own right. The book takes the side of historians who believe, based on letters and accounts, that it was Mileva- not Albert- who first put together the theory regarding relativity, which Albert subsequently published as his own. I loved the descriptive scenes of Old Europe. The portrayal of Mileva’s indomitable spirit was inspiring. The book is written in short chapters which made it easy to start and stop as needed without losing the flow of the book.
