Alvan was born Feb. 24, 1934, the son of Shelby and Vera (Stausser) Smith in Florence, Colo. He attended country school and began working on the railroad. At an early age Alvan worked on the family farm where his passion for agriculture began. Alvan was united in marriage to Deloris Jean Tague Nov. 9, 1952 in Gallatin. The couple purchased a farm south of town where they farmed and raised their 4 children. He was always eager for spring when he could go and work the land. He retied in 1994 due to the flood and began working for Union township running the motor grader. Alvin took great pride in making sure the roads were well maintained for the community, retiring in June of 2016.
Alvan was a member of the First Baptist Church in Gallatin, the NRA, and served on the Gallatin School board for 2 terms. Alvan and Jean were Amway members and had the opportunity to travel and make many friends all over the United States. He raised registered Angus cattle, quarter horses and 4-H and FFA calves. He enjoyed playing cards and loved to go dancing with friends. His family was his pride and joy and he delighted in spending time with them. Alvan was a simple man, a hard worker and a farmer, who’s infectious smile and attitude toward life was inspiring to all who knew and loved him. He will be greatly missed.
