A Chillicothe man snapped a photo of a mountain lion, believed to be 12 to 18 months old, marking the area’s first official confirmation of an actual sighting by the state’s Mountain Lion Response Team.

Gallatin 2005 graduates Caleb Kirkendoll and Brandon Meritt are opening a comic book store in Cameron. The name of the store, Watchmens, is based on the classic comic book series by Alan Moore.

Gallatin FFA and FCCLA hosted their annual barnwarming earlier this year at the Deustchman Farm. The 2006 King and Queen were Cody Selby and Samantha Mott.

There are 55,158 total acres in the Conservation Reserve Program in Daviess County, according to Kirby Payne, county director at the Farm Services Agency in Gallatin. About 24,000 acres will be eligible for signup in the fall of 1997.

Newly-elected National Honor Society officers at Winston High School are Thad Youngs, president; Jennifer Morrison, vice president; Alissa Wasmer, secretary; and Megan Uthe, treasurer.

Four-year-old Jessica Cecil escaped having to take a series of rabies shots last week after an incident with a Black Chow. Local authorities say the dog in question was identified as having had rabies vaccination last month.

MVPs of the 10th Annual Gallatin Invitational Tournament were Vickie Miles of South Harrison and Larry Hawks of Hamilton. Gallatin’s Clint Barnes and Loren Adkins were named to the all-tournament team.

Members of Gallatin’s Grand River Conference Tournament champion basketball team are David Critten, Kevin Allen, David Robertson, Gordon Thomas, Scott Watson, Craig Leopard, Kelly Pickering, Joe Griffin, Mike Shuler, Phil Whitt, Jerold Uthe and James Olney.

Robert Alden, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Alden of Hamilton, was honored as the “National Junior Shorthorn Breeder of the Year” at the recent national meeting of the American Shorthorn Association.

The Gallatin High School cooks serve 250 meals per day to students. They are Mrs. Katherine Everman, Mrs. Auvil Thompson, Mrs. Robert Allen Hill and Mrs. Maxine Whitt.

One of the most unusual events that could happen in a small town will occur in Gallatin on Jan. 30, 1967, when the post office department will issue the new 1¼ cent Albert Gallatin stamp from the Gallatin Post Office.

After six games, Lynn Mundell has emerged as the Bulldogs’ top point getter with 95 points. Mundell is averaging nearly 16 points per game on 32 of 93 from the field and 31 of 66 from the charity stripe.

Gallatin’s new dial telephone system will go into full operation Saturday night, Dec. 29, at nine o’clock, according to an announcement by Inter County Telephone officials yesterday.

Three Daviess County boys were winners in the St. Joseph Economy of Beef Production Contest. Norman O’Hare of the Coffey 4-H Club and Kenneth Sandy, Jr., of the Lone Start 4-H Club won blue ribbons. Richard Schweizer of the Gallatin FFA Chapter won a red ribbon.

A truck, loaded with Yule shipments of grapefruit and oranges, struck the gas pumps at the Colonial service station in Altamont. Quick action by an attendant in shutting off gas valves at the big storage tanks probably prevented a more serious fire.

Dec. 12, 1946

The distributive education class of the Gallatin High School is sponsoring a movie benefit night at the Courter Theatre, featuring Roy Rogers, cowboy singing star, in “Roll On Texas Moon.”

Thieves broke into the Scott service station a block west of the square, Sunday night, and took $103 from the cash register. Entrance to the station was gained by breaking a rear window.

In an effort to rid the county of rats in 1877, officials offered a bounty of five cents a head for each rat killed. In all, 28,280 rat heads were collected. A total of $1,141 was paid out and then the drive was called off when a citizen of a neighboring county took advantage of the bounty. According to legend, he corralled 700 rats, herded them across the line into Daviess County and scalped them, collecting $35 on the deal.
