The Invoice by Jonas Karlsson (Adult Fiction)

This book in five words or less: quirky, fast read, light

What initially grabbed me about The Invoice was its tidy little packaging– the book is half the size of a normal book, was on the thin side (200 pages) with attractive yet simple cover art and seemed like something a busy mom like myself could realistically finish in a week or two.  The book didn’t disappoint and was a light, quick read. The first sentence lays out the plot: the story’s hero receives an invoice for 5,700,000 kroner (about $85,000 US dollars) from a government office he doesn’t recognize for services he can’t recall receiving. Turns out, his bill is part of a wealth redistribution campaign and his middle income ho-hum life is about to be turned upside down. There’s a bit of romance, several unexpected twists and an overall message that satisfaction in life is more about attitude than context.

Dory Fantasmagory: Dory Dory Black Sheep by Abby Hanlon (Youth fiction/Early chapter books)

This book in five words or less: Like Junie B. Jones?

After reading this book I am simply loving little Dory and her crazy, hilarious world! If your young reader likes Junie B. Jones then the  Dory Fantasmagory series will be a sure hit.  In this book, Dory’s quest to learn to read finds her teaming up with her real and imaginary best friends to fight villains and take on meddling siblings, and all without skipping recess or dinner time. The illustrations are excellent and put the reader at the center of Dory’s world. These illustrations could possibly even help younger readers “read up” as the comic-like drawings scattered throughout the book well support the fast-moving and outrageous plot lines that spring forth from Dory’s imagination. It’s well-written, fun (and shhh! also good for vocabulary building!).
