Area schools have been contacted and encouraged to participate in “Poetry Out Loud.” This is an event sponsored by the Missouri Arts Council and works much like the National Spelling Bee. High School students will memorize and recite poetry in a local competition. Top contestants will then compete at the regional level. Regional winners will advance to the state level for competition.  The Missouri Arts Council will present the state champion a check for $1,000 to be used to attend the national competition in Washington, D.C. The National Endowment for the Arts will award the state champion and official chaperon an all expense paid trip to the national finals. The national finals will take place on April 24-26, 2017.  At the national finals, winners will receive $50,000 total in scholarships and school stipends, with a $20,000 college scholarship for the “Poetry Out Loud” national champion.  You may find information at missouriartscouncil.org.
