The City of Coffey has made great strides in improving their City Hall and the citizens of Coffey should be proud of the progress made in this regard. Mary Lou Browning has been a great asset to the City as her position of City Clerk. I recently assisted her in making sure the City of Coffey’s levy was correct and timely in accordance to the deadlines from the State Auditor.
In regards to the decision of the discontinuing the polling place in the City of Coffey, I reviewed this issue extensively and did not take it lightly. I also reviewed the petition and followed up with a number of individuals that signed it. The change in polling places was discussed with the Mayor and the Council in a prior meeting.
Although the city has made great strides in their building the decision has ultimately been due to cost cutting measures for the county. I have to look at the county as a whole and work within a budget that serves all county tax payers effectively in the most efficient manner. Each election costs the county over $15,000. These are your tax dollars and my tax dollars that are being spent. We have held three elections this year and will hold the fourth in November.
My office continues to be committed to ensuring the public can exercise their right to vote. As we have one more important election I encourage everyone to register by Oct. 12 and vote on Nov. 8.
Vicki Corwin,
County Clerk
