For the first time in many years, a carnival was part of the Daviess County Chautauqua. The carnival set up along East Grand Street from Gallatin City Hall to the four-way stop.

Logan Corwin will receive his Eagle Scout award at an official ceremony at the First Baptist Church on Sept. 24. Logan’s project was making improvements to the dugouts at the Dockery Park ballfields.

With her team down to its final out of the game, Maggie Strange cranked a two-run homer that capped a four-run Lady Bulldog rally and carried her team to a 5-4 victory over a tough Lawson team on Monday.

Sept. 18, 1996

Pattonsburg R-2 Board of Education has approved plans to construct energy-efficient dome structures for a new school to be located on the west edge of town at the junction of Highway 69 and Route C.

Gallatin’s first Chautauqua Car Show attracted over 110 entries, leaving organizers enthused about the prospects of an even bigger show next year. A native of Coffey, Kenny Goepferich, won the best overall trophy with a 1962 Chevy Impala SS convertible.

Sept. 24, 1986

Miss Laura Conroy of Gallatin was among the finalists of the Miss Teenage Cameron contest held recently during Cameron’s Country Days. She is the daughter of Jan Wilder and is a junior at Gallatin R-5 High School.

Sherry Golden, sixth grade teacher at Gallatin R-5 schools, received a master of science degree in education at the conclusion of the 1985-86 summer session at NWMSU.

Ray Bashford was credited with five tackles and five assists as a defensive lineman for Missouri Western during the Griffons’ 27-26 victory over Northwest Missouri State last Saturday.

Sept. 23, 1976

Waterbeds are something new. Lonny Kintner of Gallatin, a new resident of town, designs and builds the frames for waterbeds in his shop.

There have been rumors floating around the town that one of Gallaitn’s five wells has run dry. After talking with City Clerk Susie Ayers, it was learned that a pump to one of the wells is being repaired.

The first attempt at raising sweet potatoes by Mrs. Phillip Fewins of Gallatin yielded a sweet potato nearly a foot long and weighing eight pounds and seven ounces.

Sept. 22, 1966

The “Package a Month” plan to Daviess County men serving in Vietnam by the ladies of the VFW Auxiliary at Pattonsburg is proving most worthwhile and letters from county men there attest that the gesture is appreciated in every way.

Radioman Third Class Larry P. Gregory, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy M. Gregory of Gallatin, was aboard the USS Guam, prime recovery ship for the Project Gemini flight of Navy astronauts Pete Conrad and Richard Gordon.

Sunday through Tuesday at the Courter Theater in Gallatin, “Paradise Hawaiian Style,” starring Elvis Presley.

Sept. 20, 1956

A general clean-up of debris caused by last Wednesday night’s fire at the Daviess County library is in progress and repair of the damage is underway. Library officials estimate damage at $4,500 but feel fortunate that the structure was not a total loss. Lost were about half of the library’s fine collection of film strips.

Rumors are running rampant this week concerning the cost of the site for the proposed school building now under option by the school board. An option has been taken on a parcel of land belonging to Mr. and Mrs. Roy Tolbert in west Gallatin for which the board has been given a price of about $750 an acre.

Sept. 19, 1946

The Gallatin Bulldogs will take the field tomorrow night at Dockery Park favored to defeat Bethany in the season’s football opener. The Bulldogs average 160 pounds across the line, with the backfield a shade lighter.

Gatenby’s Soda Grill will make its formal bow to the public on Saturday with a special offering of ice cream sodas, made with Arctic ice cream, at a reduced price. The new business is located one block west of the southwest corner of the square.
