The theme of this year’s Daviess County Chautauqua is “Our Rich Heritage.” The Daviess County Arts Council plans to celebrate the 180th birthday of Daviess County with a number of activities centered around this theme.

Chautauqua is set for Sept. 16-18 on the Gallatin square. The opening ceremony begins at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 16.
The opening ceremony falls on National Missing In Action and Prisoner of War Day. The arts council is inviting all military veterans and/or their families to bring a picture of their veteran with a short description of when, where and which war they served. The council would like to honor veterans both living and dead. Information on how to submit this information will be coming soon.
All veterans and those currently serving are invited to the opening ceremony, during which VFW Post 2172 will present a MIA/POW ceremony. (Veterans wear your uniforms if possible!) Following the opening, all are invited to share in celebrating the 180th birthday of Daviess County. Birthday cake and cookies will be served.
Century Farm families are also asked to share representative items from their family or farm to be displayed during the weekend.
Displayed at the reception will be the veterans wall, which will display pictures and descriptions of our veterans, as well as an exhibit in honor of Daviess County’s Century Farmers. This display will be open to the public after the opening ceremony until 8 p.m. and from 2-7 p.m. on Sept. 17.
Immediately following the opening ceremony, the local band Bent Nickel will perform. Beginning at 8:30, a family movie will also be played. Also, throughout the evening the art from talented members of our community will be on display at the Chautauqua art show which will be held at Times and Seasons restaurant on the Gallatin square.
The Grand Marshal for Saturday’s parade this year is a bit different from Chautauqua events in the past. This year, the Grand Marshal will be the Daviess County Century Farmers. The Missouri Century Farm program began in 1976, as part of a bicentennial project. Over the years it has expanded greatly, and there are now in excess of 9,400 Century Farms recognized in Missouri.
This hard working group has helped to keep this community going for many years and their ancestors laid the foundation stones of our community.
The council is asking all families who have worked their land for 100 or more years to be a part of Chautauqua events. Century Farmers are asked to bring their families, tractors, trailers, trucks or anything else farm-related as special Grand Marshals of the parade.
