The Winston R-6 Board of Education approved breakfast, lunch and milk prices for the 2016-2017 school year during their meeting held July 18.
Breakfast will remain the same at $1.20 and milk at 25 cents.
The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 requires lunch prices to increase 4.97% this year to stay in compliance with the federal act. Lunch prices will increase 10 cents to $2.20 for elementary students and $2.45 for high school students and adults.
The district will have to comply with the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 until average lunch prices reach $2.78 which is up $0.08 from last year.
Closed session was held and Steve Lasman of Tipton was hired as a social studies teacher and varsity and junior high basketball coach.
The following were approved by the board: Gem Damico of Cameron as a contracted speech pathologist; Marcia Smith of Cameron as special education supervisor; Chris Youtsey as a substitute bus driver.
The board accepted the following bids: MFA Oil’s propane; Anderson Erickson’s dairy.
The USDA’s Eligibility for Free and Reduced Meals for 2016-2017 was approved.
Applications will be sent home with students at registration. Reduced meal prices are 30 cents for breakfast and 40 cents for lunch.
The board will hold the 2016-2017 School Year Tax Rate Hearing on August 15 at 7 p.m., prior to their regular monthly meeting.
The board approved revised graduation requirements that coincide with the eight period schedule that was adopted this spring. Seniors graduating in the spring of 2020 will need 28 credits to graduate.
Student and discipline handbooks for high school and elementary were approved.
Future dates of importance include: Aug. 1 – Varsity Fall Sports practices begin (9-12 grade); Aug. 8 – All Grades Student Registration 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Aug. 10-12 – Staff Inservice; Aug. 11 – All School Open House 6–7 p.m. – students bring supplies to classrooms; Aug. 15 – school board meeting; Aug. 16 – first day of school.
