She went shopping at Dollar General in Gallatin on July 15. She filled these two carts full of toys, racking up a total of $176, which was mostly Channing’s birthday money, with just a bit of help from her parents. A friend from Stanberry also contributed some toys for her to donate. Dollar General employees were able to help by advising Channing when the clearance items were going to be an additional half off … giving her even more bang for the buck!
Channing presented her gift to the Child Life Department on the cancer floor of Children’s Mercy Hospital on July 18. Her mother said the volunteers at Mercy Hospital who accepted the gift were very appreciative of the toys, but also were thrilled with the underwear and backpacks that were included.
Channing’s brother Patrick passed away on Jan. 26, 2015, at the age of 17, after an 11-year battle with cancer.
Gallatin North Missourian’s post on Facebook about Channing’s generous gift has reached over 116,000 people … and counting. The post elicited over 3,000 comments and over 800 shares. Laura said her phone has been going off like crazy from all the comments. Channing said she thought she was “famous” when someone at Children’s Mercy asked for her autograph … although at that point Channing didn’t even know what an autograph was!
