Covel D. Searcy Elementary School recently achieved the Award of Excellence from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for outstanding implementation of the Schoolwide Positive Behavior Supports (PBS) program. The PBS program has been in place for two years at CDS Elementary. Staff have received intensive training, and consistently implement a system to establish and maintain a safe and effective school environment that maximizes academic achievement, and behavioral competence of all students.
The CDSE staff teaches behavior expectations in the same manner as any core curriculum subject. The school focuses on three behavioral expectations that are positively stated, and easy to remember. In other words, rather than telling students what not to do, the school focuses on the preferred behaviors of what to do. The big three expectations include: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be a Problem Solver.
Students are recognized and rewarded for following those expectations. They earn Dog Dollars in which they are able to buy items from the school’s Paw Mart store. They also earn Dog Dollars where their entire class receives rewards.
