Joyce J. (Bond) Dustman, 92, died May 30, 2016, at her home in Gallatin. Joyce was born Aug. 24, 1923 to Ray and Eula (Blackburn) Bond in Spring Garden, Mo. As a young girl, she traveled from Missouri to California for a winter on the famous Route 66. Joyce grew up on a dairy farm and went to grade school in Spring Garden.

After graduating from Eugene High School, Joyce attended the Chillicothe Business School and then moved to Burlington, Iowa to work as a secretary. At a wedding with friends, she met Fred Dustman, a local farmer, and they were married on April 8, 1945 in Burlington, Iowa.

After living in California during Fred’s military service, the couple continued farming and began raising their family in Wapello, Iowa. Fred and Joyce then owned and lived on farms in Knox City, Jameson, and Clarksburg, Mo. When the couple moved to their farm south of Jameson in 1959, they had four sons and became active in the Jameson community for the next two decades. Fred and Joyce built a beautiful house overlooking the Grand River. After a flood destroyed their crops in 1961, they operated a restaurant in their home for two years that was a popular Daviess County destination and with visitors from dozens of states and several countries.

In 1986, Fred and Joyce retired from farming and began traveling around the United States. They lived in Arizona, Montana and Missouri. The couple enjoyed playing with their grandchildren, visiting friends, sightseeing, fishing, and square dancing during their retirement.

In 2002, they built a new house in Gallatin and Joyce lived there after her husband’s death in 2004. She continued traveling from coast to coast with visits to Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles, Calif.

Joyce was a member of the Jameson and Gallatin Christian Churches, Christian Women’s Fellowship, and was active with her husband while farming in 4-H, MFA, Farm Bureau, and the Extension service. She was well known for her pecan pies she cooked for the annual Jameson Lions Club Picnic. Joyce and Fred were active members of the Ozark Whirlers, Romney’s Raiders, Jestin JJ Dancers, and Lionshead Resort square dance clubs.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 58 years, Fred Dustman; one son, Michael Dustman in 1963; and her sister Pauline Dolan.
