A visual piece of historic Gallatin is no more after this week. A portion of the elaborate façade atop the retail building owned by Dean Hales is being removed on the east side of the business square. The ornamental façade is dated 1887.

Rebecca N. Stith, daughter of Chris and Roberta Stith, Gallatin, and granddaughter of B. D. and Margaret Stith and Dorothy Duffy, all of Altamont, completed requirements for Master’s of Science in College Student Personnel Administration from Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg.

Gallatin R-5 students recognized for perfect attendance are Dennelle Rhoades, Kevin Chadwick, Robert Rhoades, Matt Atkinson, Ashley Owens, Shelby Chadwick, Melissa King, Monica Hanson, Cary Uthe, Ashley Parton and Sarah Smith.

Dedication ceremonies to mark the official opening of the Big Creek Bridge on Highway 69 north of Pattonsburg will be held Friday.

Work to renovate the swimming pool at Daviess County Country Club has begun.

Phi Sigma Pi National Honorary Fraternity announces the induction of Kenna Johnson of Gallatin as a charter member of the Beta Chapter at Truman State University. Phi Sigma Pi is an organization based on the principles of scholarship, leadership and fellowship.

Services for Charles D. Brandom of Gallatin wee held Tuesday at the Gallatin First Baptist Church. Mr. Brandom, 90, had served as the Daviess County probate judge for 22 years. He passed the American Bar examination in 1916 and continued to practice until his death.

Two graduates from the GHS Class of 1986 signed letters of intent to attend Graceland College in Lamoni, Ia. Tina Deppen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Deppen, will enter the varsity basketball program. Barron Gann, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Gann, signed his letter to play football at Graceland.

May 27, 1976

Honored Friday as valedictorian of the Gallatin R-5 Class of 1976 was Mark Carter, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Carter, and the salutatorian was Tammy Hamilton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Hamilton.

The Gallatin Drive-In and Park ‘N’ Shop Grocery were broken into last week between Thursday evening and 7 a.m. Friday morning.

The annual Lions Club “Coon Hunt” will be held this Saturday at Dockery Park. There will be a treeing contest, bench show and water race.

May 26, 1966

The Coffey community is justly proud of its new water system which was placed into operation this month. Residents voted a $75,000 revenue bond issue to construct the system.

Lynn Leopard, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Leopard, is the valedictorian of the 1966 graduating class of Gallatin High School. Lee Curtis, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Curtis, is salutatorian.

James Eddie Saunders, Jameson, is the winner of the MFA College Scholarship presented to a graduating senior of Jameson R-3 High School. He will enroll in Central Missouri State College at Warrensburg in September.

Adaptation of figures from Yale University researchers in the current Quarterly Journal on Studies on Alcohol point to a total of 45 alcoholics with complications in Daviess County.

A tour of six new homes in Daviess County, sponsored by the Home Economics Council, will be held Tuesday, June 5. Stops on the tour will be the homes of Russell Robertson, nine miles north of Gallatin; Earl Noll, on Highway 6; Jim Tolen, Charles Reed and Mrs. Frank Black, all in Jamesport, and Pat Tolen.

May 30, 1946

Gallatin’s town team baseball club defeated Mirable, 13-4, at Dockery Park. The starting lineup was: Ike Swofford, center field; Ernie Albrecht, right field; Harry Wheeler, left field; Raymond Whitt, catcher; Dick Brown, third base; Dayton Henderson, shortstop; Lloyd Scott, second base; Galen Graham, first base; and Johnny Wilder, pitcher.

Ensign J.W. Moody of Pattonsburg, a 22-year-old student at the University of Missouri, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal and three gold stars in a ceremony Tuesday in the university library at Columbia. The medals are in recognition of 75 missions Ensign Moody completed in the Nansei Shoto group Okinawa, from April to June, 1945.
