Only five Daviess County athletes qualified for this weekend’s state track and field meet after competing Saturday in Class 1 and Class 2 sectionals in Albany.

Harris Cameron, Tate Hancock and Tanner Johnson will represent Gallatin High School in the Class 2 state event. Jordan Leonard of Winston and Peyton Jones of Pattonsburg will compete in the Class 1 state meet.

Cameron advances to the state discus competition after finishing first in the sectional with a throw of 148’6”. Cameron’s effort at sectional put him in the top three headed to the Class 2 state meet.

Hancock and Johnson both move on to state in the pole vault. Hancock grabbed second place behind Maysville’s Mason Taylor with a height of 13’. Johnson finished fourth at sectional at 12’. All 16 entries in the Class 2 state meet fall between the heights of 11’ and the 13’9” posted on Saturday by Maysville’s Mason Taylor.

Leonard will defend his Class 1 state titles in the 200- and 400-meter races and will try to return to the medal stand in the 100-meter dash. The WHS senior won Saturday’s 200-meter race in 22.76 and took the 400-meter dash in 52.15. He also placed second in the 100-meter dash in 11.18.

Jones is the lone Pattonsburg state entry in the Class 1 boys’ competition. He finished fourth in the sectional in the triple jump, 37’11.5”, to earn a spot in the 16-man field.
