Tuesday afternoon at Daviess County Country Club turned out to be a perfect setting for high school golf and Gallatin’s varsity and junior varsity squads took full advantage of the day.
The Bulldogs moved to 17-0 in varsity play after shooting a season low 149 on their home course, just six strokes off the record 143 set by the Bulldog team back in April of 2000. That varsity lineup included Brice Garnett, Scott Crose, Chad Sullenger, Joey Evans and Jake Humphrey.
Tuesday’s round produced a 24-stroke victory over runnerup Mid-Buchanan in competition with Albany and Mercer. Albany came in with a total of 183 and Mercer combined for a 225.
Jett Simmons shot 35 to lead the pack. Bradley Rhoades finished runnerup with a 38, followed closely by Logan Burns, 39; Gabe Cole, 39; and Wyatt Bird, 43.
Bulldog jayvee golfers combined for a 177 total that also easily outdistanced the other three participating junior varsity squads, thanks to the top four individual rounds. Colin Beck led with a 41, followed by Samuel Coulson with a 44, Kase Critten and Jaryd Brogan, each with rounds of 46.
Jarod Rains and Tayton Terry shot 54 and 59, respectively, for Gallatin, now 14-0 in junior varsity action.
Gallatin also won the Plattsburg Tournament last Thursday with a 314 total that beat Hamilton’s 340. Simmons was top individual with a 73. Burns shot an 87 in individual play.
Bird and Cole combined for 79 to win the best ball competition. Rhoades and Coulson won the best shot event with a combined 75.
Last Wednesday’s Cameron Tournament gave the Bulldogs a taste of some of the best area competition. The event featured 10 state qualifiers from a year ago across all classes.
Simmons’s round of 73 and third place finish came after a card-off tiebreaker to decide second place. Both he and Smithville’s Jacob Majeske shot 73 over 18 holes. Smithville’s JD Benbow finished at 72 to take the medalist honor.
Bradley Rhoades and Logan Burns both finished just outside the top ten individuals. Rhoades carded an 80 and Burns finished with an 81. Wyatt Bird came in with a 91.
It took a school over four times larger than Gallatin to knock the Bulldogs off the top spot at Cameron.
Smithville, on the strength of the top two individual spots, claimed the team title in a tight battle with three other squads. The Warriors combined for 312 to edge Gallatin, 315; Cameron, 316; and Maryville, 317.
Next up for the Bulldogs is Tuesday’s Grand River Conference Tournament at Bethany. The Bulldogs have won the last three conference tournaments.
