The GTL took possession of the building in downtown Gallatin earlier this year; it is situated immediately south of the Courter Theater. The building has historic value as it carries forward the architectural integrity of the original Townsend Block. Its metal façade is just one of many unique architectural features of the circa 1800 building. The Kulis Appliance Building, as it was known many, many years ago, is the only three-story building on its square. In yesteryear all the storefronts north to the four-way stop were of the same design. A fire in the 1800s destroyed the top floors of the northern buildings, but a firewall prevented damage to the Kulis Building.

The work of installing new windows in the former “Kulis” building is being done by Ferman Hostetler of Jamesport, with assistance from Wilmer Otto of the Jamesport-Trenton area. Six smaller windows will be installed upstairs and three bigger windows downstairs. [Staff Photo/TLH]

The window replacement, along with the roof and back wall, are among repair priorities in order to preserve the interior of the building, and for safety’s sake.

GTL will be having a tag sale during Chautauqua to sell some of the “treasures” found during a recent cleanup day.
