It is with a heavy heart that the family of Julia Ann Shank announce her passing on July 1, 2015, as the result of complications from open heart surgery. Although she fought valiantly to stay with us, in the end, the heart that held so much love for her family and friends could take no more. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12 noon Tuesday, July 7, at the Mary Immaculate Catholic Church 409 S. Main, Gallatin. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service. Cremation following. Memorial contributions may be made to the Active Ageing Resource Center, general fund in Gallatin. Arrangements under the direction of McWilliams Funeral Home 1329 W. Grand, Gallatin, MO 64640
Julia was born on June 16, 1936, and is the daughter of Eva and Peter Muller. Peter died shortly before her birth and when Eva later married Steven Komives, he became the only father she would know and love. She is survived by her husband, Terry John Shank, whom she married in 1970, and who was, without a doubt, the love of her life. She is also survived by her daughters; Diane Marie O’Dell and Linda Marie Torey, along with her sons-in-law, Troy O’Dell, and Norman Stanley. Her step-daughter, Karen Simms, and Karen’s husband Tim share in the loss.
Julia also leaves behind several adored grandchildren who love and already miss her deeply; Maxwell W. Storey, Alexandria Eve Storey, and Max’s wife, Rachel, of Minneapolis, Minn., along with Sarah Grimmer and Tyler Zajac, who reside in Michigan.
She leaves behind too many cousins, nephews, nieces, in-laws, other family members and friends to name. Be assured that each one held a special place in her heart, and knew it. Julia’s very special gift in life was to make each and every person who knew her feel loved and cared for. If you knew Julie, you knew what it was like to be loved. It’s hard to imagine what life is going to be like without her.
Julia is preceded into the afterlife by her parents; her brothers Peter, Adam, Joseph and Bill, and her sister, Ann. She is also joining many other relatives, friends, neighbors and beloved pets who have gone before her, and we are comforted knowing that they are enjoying a glorious reunion.
Julia grew up in Detroit, Mich. She spent 30 years working for the Province of St Joseph of the Capuchin Order, or “The Caps,” as she liked to call them. As Provincial Secretary, she served with honor and distinction, and was as beloved by them as they were by her.
Upon retirement, Julie and Terry moved to Lake Viking in Gallatin, where they built their dream home. She loved to spend her time gardening, fishing, reading, walking, caring for her pets and volunteering with the seniors. How many times did we hear, “I love my Seniors!”? She spent several years on the Board of Directors at the Lake, helping to take care of the area she loved and had adopted as her final home. It is there that we celebrate her amazing life.
Surrounded by friends and family she leaves a legacy of grace, acceptance and humility, truly a friend to all who met her. God has called his angel home.
