The Daviess County Health Department in conjunction with the ATV Safety Institute held an ATV safety event on Saturday, June 6, with 39 students participating. Three ATV volunteer instructors provided hands-on learning for children ages 10-18 about the basics of safe ATV riding.
“We heard from many parents about the need for this type of class for their child and they were thrilled to receive a free fitted helmet,” said Cheryl Alexander, administrator, Daviess County Health Department.
Funds for the grant were distributed through the MoDot Blueprint for Safety. Another federally funded program, the Maternal Child Health Grant, provided funds for staff time to complete the program as the MODot grant did not cover personnel.
“The Daviess County Health Department would like to thank everyone who made it possible for us to hold this event,” Ms. Alexander said.
Appreciation was expressed to Steve and Elaine Bohannon for the hay bales; Gary Alexander for helping with the tents and event; Gallatin School for use of the site; ATV Institute volunteer instructors; Rob’s Cycle for fitting the helmets; and Todd Holcomb for letting the health department borrow his ATV.
