Pastor Russ and wife Theresa Hamilton of the Gallatin First Christian Church, along with Becky Butler, daycare director, have taken a group of youth to Perryville, Ark., for a “Global Challenge.” Seven of the local youth (6-8 grade) are from the Gallatin community, and five are from the Plattsburg area (affiliated with Disciples of Christ churches).
Heifer International in Perryville re-creates communities from developing countries so young people can experience firsthand how to survive in substandard living conditions.
The mini-mission trip was paid for by the Northwest Area Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Mid-America. The group will be in Arkansas June 9, 10 and 11.
In 2013, Gallatin First Christian Church raised $5,000 to purchase an ARK for the organization. With offerings from many Vacation Bible Schools the church also purchased various animals.
Gift Ark donations go around the world, from Africa to Asia, Europe and the Americas, wherever there is hunger, poverty and hopelessness. Gift Arks help care for entire communities with milk, eggs, honey and wool. They provide income by supplying an abundance of goods to sell; sustain farming by providing livestock to work the land; improve the lives of families for generations by multiplying and passing on the gift.
“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to experience Heifer International in person,” said Theresa Hamilton. “Even though it means we won’t shower for three days!”
