On June 13, 1964, he married Bonita (Bonnie) Goossen at the Mingo Bible Church in Mingo, Kan. It was his heart’s desire to do mission work, but the Lord led them to the farm instead. He was also on the board at the Won by One Center in Hamilton; was state officer of the Gideon’s International in Kansas, and served on the Thomas County Soil Conservation Board in Kansas.

James loved his kids and grandkids and enjoyed spending time with each of them. They called him Poppy and many others knew him as Poppy too.
