The USDA supplemental food program for Women, Infants and Children is looking for you! The WIC program brings nutritional foods to you and your families. With the food instrument you are given, you can receive things like fresh fruits and vegetables, milk, cheese, yogurt, cereals, eggs, tortillas, and refried beans. If you cannot breastfeed, infants
less than one year of age can receive formula, and a baby over six months of age receives baby food. Breastfeeding is highly encouraged and recommended by the WIC program. A new food list began April 1, 2015.
Categories for the WIC program are infants (birth to 12 months), pregnant, post partum (six months from birth date), breastfeeding mothers, and children one up to the age of five years.
You must be income eligible so be sure to look at the new income guidelines listed below. An unborn child counts as a family member. Income is your gross amount, which is the amount before anything is taken out of your paycheck. Income is any money coming into the household. Examples are, child support, SSI, unemployment, and pay stubs, from all members of the household.
When you apply for WIC you must have the child’s identification as well as the parent or legal guardian’s identification, and your proof of residency. Proof of residency and income must be in the last 30 days or the health department will not be able to serve you. So please come prepared. Also if you have MC+ please bring that card along with you.
Nutritional assessments help guarantee that the WIC program benefits those who need it most and that the help given is appropriate for the participant’s nutritional health. A registered dietitian or nutritionist is available for these assessments. For mothers who want to breastfeed their babies, a breastfeeding peer counselor is on staff during WIC clinics at the health department. They field questions that new moms may have while nursing their babies and are there for support.
