Blasts from the Past

The Missouri House of Representatives honored Johnathan and Phillip Arnold last week as “Outstanding Missourians.” They are the sons of Linda and Mike Arnold, Gallatin. Third District Rep. Jim Whorton nominated the brothers for the award upon the recommendation of the Daviess County Commission for the successful establishment of a restored Civil War canon and Veteran’s Walk of Honor on the county’s courthouse lawn.

Eugene McNeely recently retired from Terry Implement, where he spent 43 ½ years as a mechanic. He started when he was 19 years old.

GHS junior Trisha Sprague set a new school record of 35’5.75” in the shot put at the Gallatin Relays.

May 3, 1995

The largest group of Gallatin FFA members to earn the highest degree at state level at the same state convention appropriately coincides with the 50^th anniversary year of the Gallatin FFA Chapter. The newest State FFA Farmers are Matt Hiskett, Chuck Weldon, Cody Bird, Aaron Ishmael and Chris Henderson.

Mike Caudle, a senior at Winston R-6, has received an athletic scholarship from CMSU at Warrensburg. After tryouts last Wednesday, Mike was selected as the CMSU mascot, Mo the Mule.

May 1, 1985

Jodie Lin of Winston R-6 School was a double winner at the state music contest in Columbia. She received a I rating for two different solos, on the bassoon and the tenor sax. She is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. George Lin.

Sally Spillman took consolation in her division at the National American Amateur Racquetball Association Tournament held in Memphis, Tenn. She is a member of the Southwest Missouri State University racquetball team.

May 1, 1975

Karl Kerns, a sophomore at Gallatin High School, went mushroom hunting and nearly stepped on a 54-inch rattlesnake. He said it had eight rattles and a button, which he is carrying around as a souvenir.

Regardless of the interest potential in each of the Gallatin student body election speeches, the announcement that the girls’ showers were flooded got the biggest ovation.

May 6, 1965

Barbara Blackburn, a sixth grade student at Gallatin Elementary School, won first place in the county, state and national History Month Essay Contest. The contest was sponsored locally by the Gallatin Chapter, D.A.R.

Connie Linville, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Archie Linville, was capped at exercises held April 28 at the St. Luke’s Hospital Nurses’ residence. She is a graduate of Hamilton High School and entered nursing training in September.

May 5, 1955

The golfing season has been officially opened this week at Daviess County Country Club with the Duffers Delite tournament. The winner of the tournament will appear on KFEQ-TV along with Hal Hamilton, president of the local club, on the Bob Horstman Show.

The Bulldog Barkettes (pep squad) elected their officers for the coming year. Dolores Shuler was elected president. Her executive officers are: Mary Eads, vice president; Kay Helton, secretary; Joyce Schmitt, treasurer; and Kay Daniels, reporter.

May 3, 1945

Heights, even from the top of a 75-foot flag pole, hold no fear for Ivan Wilder, Gallatin businessman and president of the Lions Club. When news came of the death of President Roosevelt, Wilder scaled the flag pole in order to fix the broken rope and see that the American flag is flying at half staff each day during the nation’s period of mourning.
