Marjorie Smith was born Aug. 18, 1921, to Charles and Vernice (Dunnington) Franks in Gallatin. She attended a one-room country schoolhouse through eighth grade and graduated from Gallatin High School in 1939.
Marjorie married John Robert Smith Aug. 19, 1939, and to this union two children were born, Robert and Michelle. John and Marjorie moved to Independence for two years before purchasing a home in Jameson. In 1950, John and Marjorie opened Smith’s Grocery. As merchants, they helped provide Saturday night movies for town residents until selling the store in 1959.
Additionally, Marjorie was active in the community. She was a dedicated member of the Jameson Baptist Church, and in 1945, she joined the Order of the Eastern Star and worked on the Board of Elections and the Daviess County Republican Committee. She made pies for the Jameson Picnic for more than 50 years and volunteered at the Jameson R-3 schools doing whatever was needed.
She was an avid gardener, loved to cook with her specialty being jellies, jams and breads, and liked to sew clothes for her family. Marjorie also liked to travel and especially enjoyed the time she and John traveled to Seattle, Wash., and down the West Coast. Marjorie enjoyed history and was the go-to person if you had a question about Jameson or Gallatin.
Most importantly, Marjorie was highly devoted to her family and many friends. Her legacy of hope, faith and love will live on through them.
