With warmer weather approaching, wild mushrooms are a hot ticket item. But the 1999 Missouri Food Code prohibits the sale of wild mushrooms to the public, unless each mushroom is individually inspected and found to be safe by an approved mushroom identification expert. Such expert must provide a letter or certificate to the Daviess County Health Department verifying successful completion of a wild mushroom identification course.

If you are a food vendor wanting to sell wild mushrooms at a farmer’s market or a roadside stand, you must have the mushrooms inspected first. If you are a consumer and you notice mushrooms sold at such stands without the approval of a mushroom expert, please contact the Daviess County Health Department at (660) 663-2414.

If you have any questions regarding this matter, please contact Ellen Dettman at The Department of Health and Senior Services at (573) 751-6095.
