Blasts from the Past

Students in the NCMC Introduction to Theatre class will provide technical support for the college production of “Blithe Spirit,” a classic comedy. Members of the set crew include Kristy Lawrence of Gallatin.

Nicole Ray of North Daviess, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Ray of Coffey, is a recipient of the HDC  Conference “Triple Student Athlete,” a new award that goes to student athletes who have been named to all three all-conference teams, softball, basketball and academics.

Gallatin R-5 Boys and Girls State honorees include Kinsey Batson, Katie Jarboe, Kyle Andrew, Katie Patton, Trisha Sprague and Hattie Rains.

April 5, 1995

Jane and Bill Due officially opened the A. T. Ray Home as a bed and breakfast in Gallatin last Friday. A former occupant of the home, David Wither, was the new business’ first guest.

Mary House of Gallatin has been elected Volunteer of the Year by the Daviess County Committee of OATS, Inc.

Marci Harper, Winston, placed first in the Health Occupations (skills) and second in the Health Occupations (written) competition at the 11^th annual vocational preparation contest held at North Central Area Vo-Tech School in Bethany.

April 3, 1985

Second place winner in the turkey calling contest, sponsored by Places of Gallatin, was Jerry Stewart of Gallatin, and the third place winner was Dave Rogers, Jr., of Gallatin. Each won hunting gear prizes.

Brent Collier, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Colliers, and James Macy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Weldon Macy, were recently elected to the Agricultural Student Council at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Shauna Hiley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Hiley of Gallatin, has been selected as a finalist to receive the Freshman Distinguished Scholar Award from Central Missouri State University.

April 3, 1975

The Gallatin town basketball team has completed a 16-4 season with second place trophies from the Coffey and Osborn men’s tournaments. Team members are Steve Swofford, David Michael, Richard Reynolds, Dennis Morrissey, Rick McCloud, Phil Houghton, Joe Bird and Dean Akin.

Teressa Whitt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Whitt of Gallatin, has accepted a four-year, full-ride basketball scholarship to Tarkio College in Tarkio, Mo. Teressa has played basketball the past four years at Gallatin High School and is the first girl from Gallatin to ever receive an athletic scholarship.

April 8, 1965

Gallatin R-5 School board directors assumed office Tuesday night. Don Swofford was elected president; Vencil Heldenbrand, vice president; Ruth Bailey, secretary; and Charles Belshe, treasurer. Jack Dowell was elected as the South District representative to the county school board. James McCrary is the North District representative.

Norma Uthe, Winston, won the Grand Prize in the annual Daviess County Soil and Water Conservation District poster contest.

April 7, 1955

Mrs. Jean Hudder, English teacher in the Gallatin High School, has been picked by the Lions Club as their entry in the beauty contest at the Pancake Day races in St. Joseph. Mrs. Hudder will complete her first year of teaching in Gallatin in May, after which she will join her husband who is serving with the Armed Forces in Germany.

Newly-elected officers of the Gallatin R-5 School District PTA are: Mrs. Edgar Muller, president; Mrs. George Schmitt, vice president; Mrs. Harold Bailey, secretary; Mrs. Loren Richesson, treasurer; Mrs. Wayne Helton, parliamentarian; and Mrs. Ross Naylor, historian.

April 5, 1945

The following children in the second grade made 100 on a test in spelling covering all of the words studied the past six weeks: Maxine McFee, Charlene Lynn, Sharon Alexander, Millie Walton, Tommy Ramsbottom, Joyce Paugh, Buddie Holbrook, Shirley Snider, Glen Osborn and Mildred McCrary.

Gallatin now has a full fledged Lions Club, the organization being presented its charter Wednesday evening of last week in a splendid banquet held at the McDonald Tearoom. Lions Club President Ivan Wilder accepted the charter on behalf of the club.
