Funeral services for Genevieve A. Gallihugh, 89, Chilhowee, the mother of Elizabeth Wilkinson of Gallatin, were held March 15 in Warrensburg. She passed away March 11, 2015, at her home surrounded by her family.
She was born April 20, 1925, north of Clinton. At the age of five, her family moved to Garland where her parents operated the general store. When she was a freshman in high school, they moved to Clinton. Genevieve graduated from Chilhowee High School in 1943. Following graduation, she worked at Katz Drug Store in Kansas City and attended the Music Conservatory. She was also employed with Quartz Laboratories in Kansas City during the war. She was eventually transferred to Chicago to sell gyroscopes at Union Station. She and her parents also sold gyroscopes in Los Angeles, California. She moved to Blairstown in 1949 to go into business with her parents at the Blairstown Grocery.
She married Charles William Gallihugh on May 6, 1950, in Clinton. The couple moved to a farm east of Blairstown for a brief time. In 1951, they moved to their farm at Chilhowee. They also lived on a farm near Centerview for about 10 years before returning to their Chilhowee farm in 1976. Genevieve worked at United Missouri Bank in Warrensburg from 1970 to 1980. Next, she was employed with the Blairstown Bank. Upon its closing, she worked at Warrensburg Central Bank until retiring to her farm. She loved gardening, watching old movies and playing golden oldies on her grand piano. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and hosting large family gatherings.
Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth Wilkinson and husband Darryl of Gallatin, and Margaret Neal and husband Robert of Leeton; seven grandchildren, Andrea (Dallas) Lockridge, Jill (Neal) Steward, Scott (Michelle) Wilkinson, all of Cameron, Brett Wilkinson of Kansas City, Daniel (Noelle) Neal of Springfield, Matt Neal of Warrensburg, and Tommy (Adrienne) Neal of Colorado; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband William in 2002, and her sister Christina Leeper in 2009. Genevieve and Christina both died on March 11, exactly six years apart.
