Ted was born Oct. 24, 1944, to Elaine and Silas “Buck” Buckland in Idaho Falls, Idaho. He graduated from high school in Chico, Calif., and attended Brigham Young University, where he organized, directed, and performed with the musical singing group, The Sounds of Freedom. As a group they traveled and shared songs of patriotism during the Vietnam War, performed on the Ed Sullivan Show, and cut a record. Ted graduated from Chico State University. He married the darling red head from his college English class, Sharon Loya, on Dec. 13, 1968.
Ted and Sharon had five children: Erin Martineau, Noell Hyman, Chad Buckland, Blake Buckland, and Lindsay Church. As a family they lived in many places across the country: Red Bluff, Calif.; Mesa, Ariz.; Whittier, Calif.; West Bloomfield, Mich.; Topeka, Kan.; Parkville, Mo.; and Jameson.
Ted served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in England, and also served in several Bishoprics and the High Council. He worked for the Explorer division of the Boy Scouts of America and was a CEO for the American Cancer Society until he retired in 2010.
In spite of living with Parkinson’s disease for eleven years, Ted continued to live a very active life with no complaint. He lived a big life. He was a great teacher, a wonderful and devoted family man. He was a dedicated and caring husband, dad, and grandfather, and he loved his faith. Ted was a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and loved singing, working with his hands and building things, helping people, and using his skills to make change for the better. We remember his sense of humor and quick wit. He always made us laugh. We will miss him.
Survivors include his wife Sharon of the home; sons, Chad Buckland of Jameson, Blake (Erin) Buckland of Lehi, Utah; daughters, Erin (Kevin) Martineau of Liberty, Mo., Noell (Israel) Hyman of Chandler, Ariz., Lindsay (Trent) Church of Kansas City, Mo.; brother, Jay (Linda) Buckland of Texas. Ted has 14 grandchildren.
