Winston’s boys moved one step closer to an HDC basketball title last night with a 68-31 win over Gilman City.

The Redbirds, 20-2 overall and unbeaten at 5-0 in conference play, face Grundy County, East Harrison and North Harrison in the final two weeks of the regular season. Winston will not face another team with a winning record until the Redbirds get into district play.

Winston overwhelmed Gilman City with a 25-8 start off the opening tip. Craig Lewis led the Redbirds with 13 points, followed by Jordan Leonard with 11 and Saxton Pliley with 10.

The Redbirds, ranked eighth in Class 1, came out firing against #3 Hardin-Central on Friday. Winston took a 24-16 lead in the first quarter and rolled to a 42-24 half time advantage on the way to a convincing, 70-51 victory. The Redbirds led by as many as 28 points in the third period and subbed deep into the fourth quarter to get everyone several minutes of playing time.

Leonard led all scorers in the game with 28 points and 12 rebounds. Chevy Calhoon popped in 15 for the Birds. Hisel finished with 11 and Pliley canned 10. Craig Lewis dished out nine assists to teammates.

Winston knocked off Pattonsburg, 74-42, last Thursday night behind 17-point performances by Pliley and Leonard. Kristchon Hisel also hit double figures for the Redbirds with 11 points.
