Today concludes another productive week for legislators at the Missouri capitol, and the weeks to come are sure to get even busier. The Senate has followed the lead of the House and rejected a proposed pay increase for House Members, Senators and the Executive branch. The Dairy Revitalization Act has taken another step through the House toward eventually becoming law. And I was honored to be voted by my 33 freshman classmates to be on the 4-person Freshman Class Leadership Committee.
In the coming weeks, action on the House floor is sure to increase, as there have been nearly 800 bills filed in the House of Representatives and nearly 400 in the Senate. As these bills work their way through the committee process, we will spend long days on the House floor debating their pros and cons.
One of the bills discussed will be HB639, which is a bill I filed to extend the law that allows for a regional jail district. This bill will insure that the DeKalb-Daviess Regional Jail in Pattonsburg will continue to operate without interruption, and allow other counties to join our district or other regions in Missouri to form their own regional jail so they can see the same benefits that we have here. By sharing our resources, Daviess and DeKalb Counties have saved thousands of taxpayer dollars. We have even benefitted Livingston County as they have closed their jail and now rent space in ours. Well-run government programs seem few and far-between, and this is one worth continuing.
If you ever get the chance, I invite you to visit our wonderful capitol building. Did you know that Missouri’s capitol building in Jefferson City is the second largest state capitol building in the country? Texas has the largest (those Texans have to make everything big). Free tours are available throughout the year, so come down, take a tour, and drop by my office. I would love to see a familiar face from the homeland.
Until next time, best wishes and good health to you and your family,
State Rep. J. Eggleston, District 2
