Dear Editor:
On Jan. 19, 2015, we had a unique situation in Livingston County, Mo., where a fugitive from the State of Iowa wanted for attempted murder was hiding in a conservation area and reported to be armed and dangerous.
Daviess County Sheriff Ben Becerra responded to our location for assistance and made his staff available to assist however needed.
Graham later allegedly gave multiple indicators to law enforcement and/or family/friends on how he was prepared to die and have law enforcement kill him, in addition to being well armed with a rifle, shotgun with slugs and handgun(s) and a second person there helping him (he was later proven to have been alone).
This incident happened on a holiday and I am certain it was a lengthy disruption to these officers and their staff in addition to creating much worry for their family, loved ones, and co-workers. The outcome of an arrest without anyone being injured was not likely to take place that day. However, the entire group worked together to see that no one was injured, the suspect was arrested and potentially valuable evidence was ultimately collected for the State of Iowa to further aide in prosecuting the suspect for attempted murder.
The citizens of Daviess County should be proud of and commend Sheriff Becerra and his staff for their leadership, assistance and professionalism.
Respectfully,
Steve Cox, Livingston County Sheriff’s Office
