A special dedicatory celebration will be held Jan. 22, when William Jewell College will name its new wood basketball court in honor of veteran men’s basketball coach Larry Holley, who has been the head men’s coach for the past 25 years.

Northwest Missouri State University Student Senate President Chase Cornett, son of Ronnie and Pam Cornett of Pattonsburg, is one of only six college students from the United States who will attend this year’s International Student Festival in Trondheim, Norway.

Jan. 25, 1995

Joy Wilsted of Lake Viking was featured by photograph and article published in the Jan. 11 edition of the Liberty Sun Chronicle. Ms. Wilsted’s work with reading classes in the North Kansas City School District was the focus of the feature.

Gallatin junior varsity basketball girls blasted South Harrison, 47-28, Saturday night to claim the championship of the Gallatin Junior Varsity Tournament. Devin Hamilton led the GHS group with 24 points. Amanda Dixon contributed 13 points, as well.

Jan. 23, 1985

The Jameson Huskies claimed their first girls’ tournament championship in years by defeating Class 3A Trenton in the finals of the Gilman City Tournament, 34-32. Trenton did a masterful job on Cherri Griffin, holding the all-stater to single digits, but Teresa Griffin picked up the slack scoring 16 points and Jameson’s defense did the rest.

Two youngsters won third place in their age groups at the Northwest District Hoop Shoot staged at Trenton. Brent Brown of Jameson, in the 12-13 age group, and Sonny Clutter of Coffey, were winners.

Jan. 23, 1975

Recognized for their service by the Gallatin Jaycees at their annual banquet were: Phil Tate, Outstanding Young Man; Conrad Cole, Outstanding Young Farmer; Mrs. Richard Robertson, Outstanding Young Educator; Duane Frost, Distinguished Service; and Douglas Roberts, Outstanding Jaycee.

Miss Diana Parker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Parker of Altamont and a junior at Winston High School, is winner of the District 1 Voice of Democracy Contest sponsored by the VFW and Auxiliary.

Jan. 21, 1965

Top-seeded Jameson rolled past Winston, 75-63, Friday night to capture the championship of the Maysville Tournament. Robert Drummond of Jameson was awarded the Whitaker Memorial Trophy as the outstanding player in the tournament. He scored 75 points in three games. Mark Strasser of Winston took high honors in the title game with 28 points.

Staff Sgt. Kenneth W. Stockwell, whose wife, Irene, is the daughter of Detmer Brannen of Pattonsburg, has been awarded the U. S. Air Force Air medal for meritorious achievement during aerial flight support of the fight against Communist aggression in Viet Nam.

Jan. 20, 1955

The Gallatin Community Garden Club, in cooperation with the Daviess County Court, announced plans to re-open the ladies lounge and restroom in the county courthouse, a project which will meet with universal support.

Baseball fans of North Missouri will have an opportunity to see and hear Lou Boudreau, noted baseball figure and new Kansas City Athletics manager, at an open meeting in Chillicothe. Another outstanding football personality, Cal Hubbard, has been invited to speak a the meeting.

Marriage licenses issued from the Daviess County recorder’s office during 1954 surpassed the mark of the preceding year, with 74 couples obtaining the permits to wed. On the other side of the ledger, divorces granted from the Circuit Court were down. There were only 12 divorce suits granted during the year.

Jan. 25, 1945

Pfc. Dale Reno, 20 years old, was killed in action in Belgium, Dec. 23, according to a message received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Reno of Civil Bend. Dale was with the glider infantry in an airborne division.

Gallatin is to have a Western Auto Supply store early this spring. The building at the southeast corner of the square, known as the Trust Company building, has been leased for the business.
