“We had a good weekend,” said GHS Coach Barron Gann. “That was the best we have ever finished at that tournament,” he added. “We are the smallest school. With a break in a couple of matches, we could have been second.”

Wyatt Bird pinned Polo’s Landon Smith in action Tuesday night at the Polo Quad.

As the smallest school in the tournament, the Bulldogs swept to a third place team finish behind Chillicothe and Versailles. Ten GHS wrestlers finished at least as high as sixth place in their respective weight divisions, including one, Jesse Bundy, who captured the individual title in the 195-pound weight class.

Bundy won four matches, including two by pin and another by major decision over Chillicothe’s Kade Burton in the championship match.

Michael Stanley pinned four straight opponents in the 220-pound class before running into Brookfield’s Reed McBroom, last year’s state runnerup at 195 pounds. Stanley fought hard but came up short on a 4-2 decision and settled for second place in the tournament.

Wyatt Bird pinned his final three opponents in the 132-pound class and finished with a 4-1 record on the day and third place finish. Bird’s lone loss came in the semifinals against Clinton’s Benny Ladd.

Trystan Sunby rolls Maysville’s Patrick Clark onto his back in moments ahead of a pin.

Caleb Michael won five matches on Saturday, with a lone loss against Marshall’s Ryan Henderson. Michael’s final win of the day gave him third place in the 145-pound class.

Trystan Sunby pinned four of five opponents to finish third in the 182-pound class. His only loss came in the fifth round against Dylan Ballew of Versailles.

Rian Critten finished 3-3 for the day and his pin of Marshall’s Hunter Hostetter gave him fifth place in the tournament’s 126-pound class. Michael McLey lost a close decision in his first 285-pound match of the day but battled back to pin four straight opponents for a fifth place finish.

Bradley Rhoades won two of six matches in the 138-pound class and finished sixth in that division. CJ Richards finished 2-3 and seventh at 152 pounds. Jared Williams won one match in 113-pound competition and finished fifth overall. Dillan Gray finished 2-3 at 160 pounds. Dalton Swalley won one match at 170 pounds. Both were 12th place finishers.

Gallatin finished with two wins in three matches Tuesday night at Polo’s quad. The Bulldogs defeated Polo, 54-26; lost to Maysville, 51-30, and beat Tarkio, 66-6.

Individual records from Tuesday included: Jared Williams 2-1, Rian Critten 2-1, Wyatt Bird 2-1, Bradley Rhoades 0-1, Caleb Boyd 1-0, Caleb Michael 3-0, Corbin Toney 1-2, CJ Richards 2-1, Dalton Swalley 2-1, Trystan Sunby 3-0, Jesse Bundy 3-0, Michael Stanley 1-2 and Michael McLey 3-0.

Gallatin will host Albany and South Holt on Thursday and the Bulldogs will compete in the Plattsburg Tournament on Saturday.
