Freezing rain and icy roads have made a shambles of high school basketball tournaments throughout Northwest Missouri this week, including the 11th annual Lawson Tournament. Unless conditions improve this afternoon (Wednesday), tonight’s games could be in jeopardy, as well. A full day of games on Saturday is a foregone conclusion.
Clayton Baker, the third-ranked Missouri Class 1 wrestler at 189 pounds, remained unbeaten at 11-0 by pinning Warrensburg’s Trey Neal for an individual title at the Marshall Tournament.

Student Council candidates Brett Steward and Kim Ruse were crowned King and Queen during the Gallatin R-5 Winter Sports Coronation prior to the basketball games Friday night.
Phil Tate of Gallatin, serving as state representative for the 3rd District, was named Man of the Year in Missouri Agriculture by Missouri Ruralist magazine.
When Nathan Taylor stepped to the line with five seconds left in the game and sank a pair of free throws, about four things would have to happen for Worth County to pull out a win. Three of four almost got the job done. Junior guard P. J. Sanders hit a last-shot three-pointer but because the Bulldog defense backed off to give him the shot, there was no repeat of an earlier four-point play for the Tiger all-conference guard.

A group of Historical Society members, including Lavina Lowrey, David Stark, Alberta Volk, LelaRose Hartpence, Eddie Benney, Imogene Southers, Jack Tingler and Dorothy Dale, have reviewed the first copy of the Daviess County history book. Plans for distribution will be announced at a later date.
Hamilton’s Chamber of Commerce is scrutinizing an idea forwarded by Kansas State architect student and PHS alumnus Dan Himmelberg to convert the area now occupied by the Burlington Northern rail line into a city park.

Selected to reign at GHS Courtwarming was Teresa Collins, junior candidate. Escorting her was Danny Robertson.
Danny Robertson tallied 38 points, including 26 in the first half, to lead the Bulldogs to an 82-80 victory over Polo. Rick Lewis followed Robertson with 17 points.

Dick Paul, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Paul of Gallatin, has been elected president of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity at the University of Missouri at Rolla. Dick is a junior majoring in electrical engineering.
A familiar face will be missing from the Gallatin business scene from now on with the retirement of Lial Dowell, who has closed his garage and machine shop here after 19 years of service. Two new auto repair firms, one owned by Jeff Whitfield and the other by Jess Reynolds, have moved into new buildings in the past few weeks.

Charlene Schmitt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Schmitt, and Kay Helton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Helton, Gallatin High School students, won the grand prize for news copy-reading and headline writing in the Inter-Scholastic Press Association contest held in Columbia.
A total of 2,511 cases of tuberculosis was reported for Missouri during the calendar year 1953, and 113, 531 new cases were reported in the continental United States and its territories.
The high-flying McFall Bulldogs are still in the driver’s seat in the conference race by virtue of a 95-60 trouncing of the Mustangs of Jamesport. Kenneth Teel led the high scoring McFall team with 35 points while Baxter had 20 for the losers.

John Woodruff, owner of the Woodruff ice cream factory, fell from the top of a carload of coal at the Wabash depot. He was badly bruised from head to foot and sustained a fractured elbow.
In honor of Pvt. Mary Shewmaker, Dean Welsh entertained with a dinner at Fitter’s Bakery Tuesday evening. The main dish was baked raccoon, which was pronounced by those who partook of the meal, as delicious.
