“That guy looks just like the Mi Mexico owner, Sal Hernandez,” I said to my wife. We were traveling to Tucson, Ariz., and gassing up at a truck stop in Tucumcari, NM, on Jan. 2 around 8 a.m. “This guy looks exactly like Sal. The resemblance is remarkable,” I continued.
“Maybe it is Sal. Mi Mexico is closed because the family is traveling somewhere out west,” my wife Shirley said. As she spoke, I noticed the Sal look-alike was standing with a group around a truck with . . . Missouri license plates!
“We’ve been to my son’s wedding in California. I’ve got to be back in Gallatin tomorrow to open the restaurant,” Sal confirmed after I ran out and jubilantly greeted him. Sal, Sr. and son Enrique were standing with him, with more from his group inside. Shirley insisted on a picture and we all lined up in the truck stop parking lot with a scenic butte in the background.
Trouble was the camera was very stiff from being in the cold car all night. (All this distance south, we’re approaching Mexico, and it’s still only 12 degrees.) As it turned out the camera didn’t get the picture, but the incident is definitely one for the “It’s a Small World” department.
