The Winston R-6 School District has applied for funds through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) National Clean Diesel Rebate program to replace two buses.
Public and private school bus fleet owners are eligible to apply for funding to replace school buses that have older, dirtier diesel engines.
The EPA has implemented standards that require diesel engines to be more than 90% cleaner, but many older diesel school buses remain in operation and predate these standards.
As part of the 2014 School Bus Replacement Funding Opportunity, EPA is offering approximately $3 million in rebate funding. Agencies in EPA Region 7 (Missouri, Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska) are eligible for an additional $700,000 in rebates.
Superintendent Brian Robinson said selection is based on a lottery system of school districts that have eligible buses. The EPA will randomly select applications for funding using a random number generator. Selections will be posted on the EPA website in mid-December.
