On October 1, 2014, the Daviess County Health Department was awarded a contract for the special supplemental nutrition program for Women, Infants, and Children, known as W.I.C.

This contract will run until Sept. 30, 2015, and is 100% federally funded.
The amount of the contract for WIC and nutrition services is $33,723. Also included is Special Grant Breastfeeding peer counselor for the amount of $5,000; Special Grant Breastfeeding peer counselor for the amount of $1,554. Another $446 is for special funding (WIC conference expenses). Total contract amount is $40,723 with the caseload being 208 clients monthly. The reimbursement rate is $13.50 per client.
The most recent changes in WIC food items are skim – 1% milk for children two years and above and to women, and the removing of 46 ounce cans of juice from the program (adding goat milk, salmon, sardines in tomato, mustard sauces, and tofu) in special food packages managed by the RD or nutritionist.
In Missouri there are a combined 675 grocery stores and pharmacies serving WIC clients. An average food package received monthly is approximately $59 for a woman or child.
Participant eligibility is based on three things, category, income and nutritional risk. Categories include:
Women – pregnant, postpartum up to six months after delivery, breastfeeding women with an infant up to one year of age, infants from birth up to one year of age, and children one year of age to their fifth birthday.
Income is calculated on the family income at 185% or less of federal poverty level. See guidelines below.
Nutritional assessments help guarantee that the program benefits those who need it most and that the help given is appropriate for the participants’ nutritional health. A registered dietitian or nutritionist is available for these assessments.
Breastfeeding peer counselors are available to assist breastfeeding moms.
