Last Tuesday, Missourians across this great state exercised their constitutional right to vote and let their voices be heard. Their desires, their decisions, and their votes sent a clear message while setting the direction for our state and nation.
Missouri’s voters re-elected our State Auditor along with several new state senators and state representatives. They passed a measure to make it easier to prosecute individuals accused of a sexual crime against a child, and they implemented a check and balance on a governor’s authority to withhold money. They defeated a proposal which would have established early voting in Missouri and they chose not to support the removal of teacher tenure.
When the Legislature returns to the Capitol in January, the Republicans will still hold majorities of historic size in both the Missouri House and Senate. With those historic majorities, will come a great responsibility to better the quality of life for Missouri’s citizens. If they do as the candidates promised, education funding will go up, frivolous lawsuits will go down, and state government will become more efficient.
In the months ahead, these newly elected officials will have the opportunity discuss, deliberate and ultimately to decide on the issues plaguing our state. They have the authority and responsibility to set public policy that will lead to enhancements in our educational system, our legal system, and our regulatory environment. If successful, they will get government out of the way so that Missouri’s hard working citizens can enhance the quality of life for themselves and their children.
