Last week, the annual Silver Hair Legislature convened in Jefferson City at the State Capitol Building. The purpose of this legislative body is to meet for three days, listen to various speakers and then vote as a group on the five most important priorities for seniors. These priorities are then advocated to members of the State Legislature. This year’s top priorities were: 1) Restoring Funding for Home Delivered and Congregate Meals; 2) Restore funding for Area Agencies on Aging; 3) Expand Medicaid eligibility from current level; 4) Increase MO Healthnet allowable asset amount to $2,000 for individuals and $4,000 for a couple; 5) Retain property tax credit known as “circuit breaker.” Silver Hair Representatives from Daviess County were Troy Lesan and Shirley Leakey. The Silver Hair Legislature is comprised of 10 regions representing the entire state. The SHL is strictly an advocacy group for seniors. The Missouri Legislature has been generous enough to provide funding for the annual meetings and give seniors a format for discussing their issues each year. The Missouri SHL is also the first of its kind and the oldest in the nation having been in existence since 1976.
