Harris Cameron’s strong defensive rush nearly got to Wolverine quarterback Matt White before he could unload the ball.
When quarterback Matt White left Friday night’s game via an injury with 2:56 left, it was a blow to Maysville’s morale, but what happened next couldn’t have worked out better for the Wolverines.
Halfback Reid Steiner took two steps forward into the quarterback spot and led the Wolverines on a 24-second, 41-yard, game-winning scoring drive that overshadowed a Herculean effort by Gallatin to pull off an upset that would have re-shuffled Grand River Conference standings.
With the 22-14 victory, Maysville further solidified its lead in the conference, but the Wolverines face a tough opponent on Friday in South Harrison.
White’s exit came after a successful two-point conversion run that tied the game at 14-14, capping an 81-yard, four-minute drive. The Wolverine offensive assault in the fourth quarter produced over 130 yards through the air.
Defense ruled the first three quarters. Maysville put six points on the board late in the second quarter after a 15-yard Bulldog face mask penalty kept a sputtering drive alive.
Gallatin’s defense continued to come up with big plays in the third quarter. Trystan Sunby intercepted a pass. Wyatt Bird sniffed out a reverse and made the tackle for a loss. Harris Cameron blocked a punt, but the Bulldogs could not take advantage until early in the final period.
On the first play of the fourth quarter, Jesse Bundy stuck Steiner, who coughed up the ball to Logan Jeffers at the Wolverine 24. Three plays later, Sunby scored from two yards out to tie the game at 6-6.
The Bulldog defense wasn’t through yet. White put the ball on the ground and Michael Stanley recovered on the Wolverine 26 with 9:16 left to play. Facing fourth and four on the 20, quarterback Jacob Boyd faked a handoff to Sunby and lobbed a pass to Colten Beck all alone on a post pattern.
Beck walked in the with score, then caught a two-point conversion pass to give the Dogs a 14-6 cushion, but the Wolverines would knot the score again five minutes later before scoring the decisive TD with 11 seconds remaining in the game.
Penalties mocked the Bulldogs in the closing moments. An intentional grounding call helped clip short a drive. A penalty for a late hit out of bounds spurred the Wolverines to the game-winning score.
