HARRISON COUNTY, MO — The Harrison County Collector’s office will handle taxes for the City of Bethany under an agreement approved by the Bethany City Council. The city will pay a commission to the county for collecting the tax under a contract recently negotiated. The county will also handle collections of delinquent taxes for the past three years. They city previously had attempted to collect past due taxes for the previous five years but this conflicted with the county’s policy of abating taxes after three years. The decision means Bethany residents will receive both their county and city tax bill on one statement. The change comes after the city collector resigned from the position to become a teacher in a nearby school district. The city plans to retain the office but, under the ordinance approved, will offer compensation of only $1 per year. This allows for the change in collections without the expense of a public election. City officials believe that moving tax collections to the county could reduced the city’s delinquent tax list because property owners have to show proof that they have paid their personal property taxes to license vehicles.
